The Transnet Heritage Library permits the DRISA Project to access its vast collection of photographic material for the purposes of digitisation, collection of metadata and hosting on the internet. The photographic materials encompass in excess of 200 000 images in the form of prints, lantern slides, glass negatives, albums, 35mm slides and plastic negatives, in both colour and black and white. Scanning has slowed down during the pandemic, but continues. Since the publication of the images on the internet, volunteers have been suggesting corrections and improvements to the photo captions. Visitors are encouraged to do the same by reporting them to the email addresses on the home page.
The image catalogue is hosted on AtoM, a database developed for archival collections and fully compliant with the standards of the International Council on Archives (ICA).
